Men's tennis falls in SSC semifinals

SAINT LEO, Fla. – In its Sunshine State Conference semifinal matchup, the No. 5 Saint Leo men's tennis team fell 5-2 to No. 9 Lynn University, Friday evening at the Saint Leo Tennis Complex.

The Lions fall to 15-5 on the season while the Fighting Knights improve to 16-3.

Saint Leo began with a quick doubles win as No. 7 tandem of Alex Theiler and Bruno Sisti battled Pavel Mojha and Medhi Laalej to an 8-3 victory in doubles action. 

The remaining courts saw Lynn take a 2-1 advantage on the best-of-5 contest as Daniel Riggs and Alessio Iannozzi bested Fons Verberne and Guillaume Vanelven 8-6 before the final court of Paolo Volpicelli and Fernando Rivas emerged with a close 8-6 win over Egor Panyushkin and Netanel Alcabas to conclude the doubles round.

No. 21 Theiler swept No. 11 Riggs behind a 6-3 and 6-1 effort to draw the match even at 2-2.  Lynn regained the lead after Sisti fell to Volpicelli to give the Fighting Knights a 3-2 advantage.

The Fighting Knights would add another pair of wins to end the contest and advance to the SSC Men's Tennis Championship match.

The Lions await potential postseason selection, with the NCAA Division II Men's Tennis Selection Show airing Tuesday, April 28 at 8:30 p.m.
