Lions crush No. 37 Panthers in midweek duel

SAINT LEO, Fla. – After a near two-week hiatus, the No. 5 Saint Leo men's tennis team returned to the court, besting No. 37 Florida Tech on Wednesday by a 9-0 sweep at the Saint Leo Tennis Complex.

The Lions improve to 14-4 on the season with a 4-1 tally in Sunshine State Conference contests while the visiting Panthers drop to 12-8 with a 1-3 record in SSC action.

The Green and Gold stormed past FIT in the doubles round, sweeping the Panthers 3-0 at the conclusion of tandem play.  Egor Panyushkin and Netanel Alcabas finished first, handing Florida Tech duo, Daniel Armellino and Lee Schmidt an 8-1 loss.

Guillaume Vanelven and Fons Verberne outdueled Aria Canadell and Jose Martinez for the second Saint Leo win before No. 7 duo of Alex Theiler and Bruno Sisti bested Beau Fieldsend and Ricardo Corona in the top flight by an 8-6 final tally.

The Lions picked up where they left off in singles action, sweeping the match behind a 6-0 round.  No. 21 Theiler ousted Fieldsend for the second time of the match, this time in singles play, sweeping his Panther counterpart by a pair of 6-1 sets.  Jacobo Gonzalez-Tarrio clinched the match with a 6-2 and 6-1 win over Martinez as the Lions continued to dominate the No. 37 team in the nation.

Vanelven bested Armellino in straight sets while Verberne was the fourth to finish as he defeated Majed Aslhaikh by a set of 6-1 frames.  Both Sisti and Panyushkin ended the match with wins as the Saint Leo earned the clean sweep for its fourth conference victory.

The Lions will continue SSC action by hosting its final home contest of the season, a 3 p.m. Thursday match against Eckerd College on April 9.
