No. 8 men's tennis defeats No. 14 NYIT

SAINT LEO, Fla. – Concluding a busy spring break, the No. 8 Saint Leo University men's tennis team defeated the visiting No. 14 New York Institute of Technology by a 6-3 score on Saturday at the Saint Leo Tennis Complex.

The Lions improve to 13-4 on the season while the Bears dip to 5-6 on the season.

Alex Theiler and Bruno Sisti battled David Jiang and Nico Jubera to a quick 8-1 win in doubles play while Guillaume Vanelven and Fons Verberne bested Matej Selecky and Rafal Charkiewicz by a similar 8-1 tandem takedown.  The Lions cruised to a 2-1 advantage heading into singles play.

Theiler dueled Jiang to a straight-set sweep, ousting the NYIT athlete by a pair of 6-0 sets.  Netanel Alcabas followed with a consecutive-set victory over Selecky to give Saint Leo a 4-1 advantage.

Vanelven clinched the match after defeating Charkiewicz by 6-3 and 6-4 sets to earn the decisive fifth win of the contest.

Jacobo Gonzalez-Tarrio added the sixth win in similar sweep fashion, besting Jubera by a pair of 6-2 set scores.

The Lions will continue its season hosting Florida Tech on April 8th at 3 p.m. at the Saint Leo Tennis Complex.
