Men's tennis battles Avengers to a 7-2 victory

SAINT LEO, Fla. – Meeting the Avengers in an afternoon duel, the No. 8 Saint Leo men's tennis team bested the top-ranked junior college program, ASA College by a 7-2 score on Saturday at the Saint Leo Tennis Complex.

The Green and Gold improve to 10-3 on the season while the visiting Avengers draw even at 4-4 on their 2015 campaign.

Guillaume Vanelven and Fons Verberne defeated Rasheed Carey and Diego Alcocer by an 8-2 score before Egor Panyushkin and Netanel Alcabas battled back from a 6-1 deficit facing Shaquille Taylor and Jack Boling.  The tandem took the second flight by a 9-8 (8-6 tiebreak), pulling off the win to give Saint Leo a 2-1 advantage after doubles action.

Alex Theiler bested No. 4 Callum Poland-Smith by a pair of 6-4 sets before Alcabas won his match against No. 5 Boling in three tightly-contested sets.  Verberne clinched the match with the decisive fifth win, defeating Taylor with 6-2 and 6-4 set wins.

Oskar Nurmio trumped Alcocer by 6-0 and 6-2 scores while Vanelven outdueled No. 27 Stephen Watson in consecutive sets as the Lions won 7-2 on the match.

The Green and Gold will meet Georgia College on Monday, March 16th on the campus of the University of West Florida for a 1 p.m. start.
