Lions pick up a pair of Sunday wins

SAINT LEO, Fla. – Rolling to a pair of Sunday wins, the Saint Leo University men's tennis team swept its doubleheader, besting both Merrimack College and the No. 27 University of Southern Indiana.  The Lions defeated the Merrimack Warriors 9-0 before battling the Screaming Eagles of USI to a 7-2 win.

The Green and Gold improve to 8-2 on the season while the Merrimack falls to 1-2 and Southern Indiana drops to 5-3 for its 2015 campaign.

Saint Leo made quick work of the visiting Merrimack College Warriors, taking a 9-0 victory to begin the Sunday double-feature.

Beginning singles play, Netanel Alcabas and Egor Panyushkin bested Steven Francis and Mikhail Belov by an 8-3 score before Fons Verberne and Guillaume Vanelven battled Frank Vega and Vince Bellino to an 8-1 win.  The Lions took a 3-0 sweep of the doubles round as the final match concluded with a default victory.

Kicking off singles action, Theiler defeated Francis by 6-1 and 6-0 set scores while Alcabas defeated Belov in similar sweep fashion.  James Defusto took his singles matchup over Vega to seal the Saint Leo win behind 6-1 and 6-4 sets.  Jacobo Gonzalez-Tarrio defeated Miguel Belfort 8-1 to round out singles action.

The Lions took-down the No. 27 ranked Screaming Eagles by a 7-2 final score.  Saint Leo took a 2-1 lead into singles action, as Alex Theiler and Gonzalez-Tarrio earned a win over USI tandem Joel Stern and Anthony Van Rompay 8-4.  Vanelven and Verberne trumped Samuel Kiladejo and Aaron Barris by a close 9-7 win while Alcabas and Panyushkin fell 9-8(7-4) to Roman Laga and Jack Joyce.

In singles play, Panyushkin bested Kiladejo in straight-sets despite a close second frame resulting in an 8-6 tiebreaker.  Vanelven swept Van Rompay while Gonzalez-Tarrio earned his ninth win of the season by outdueling Stern 7-5 and 6-1.  Verberne and Alcabas each earned set wins to give Saint Leo a 7-2 win over Southern Indiana.

The Green and Gold will host Georgia Gwinnett on Wednesday, March 11 for a 3 p.m. start at the Saint Leo Tennis Complex.
