Men's tennis falls to Barry on the road

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – In a weather-shortened outing, the No. 8 Saint Leo men's tennis team fell to the No. 3-ranked Barry University by a 6-1 score at the Buccaneers Tennis Complex on Saturday.

The Lions drop to 6-2 on the season and a 2-1 tally in Sunshine State Conference play while the hosting Buccaneers improve their pristine record to 7-0 while earning their first conference win (1-0 SSC).

In the top flight of doubles action, Alex Theiler and Bruno Sisti battled Ahmed Triki and Fabian Groetsch to an 8-6 victory.  The remaining two doubles duos for the Bucs defeated their Lions counterparts to give Barry a 2-1 lead heading into singles action.

Singles play was cut-short due to rain, however Barry was able to clinch the match as four courts finished before the downpour started.  Triki outdueled Egor Panyushkin by 7-5 and 6-3 set scores while Nico Dreer bested Sisti behind 6-4 and 6-1 sets.

Barry's Kevin Sielmann defeated Netanel Alcabas by a pair of 6-4 sets before Jacobo Gonzalez-Tarrio was handed his first loss of the season, a 6-2 and 6-0 setback to Fabian Pronnet.

The remaining two sets remained unfinished as rain caused the match to conclude early with a 6-1 score.

The Lions return home to host Merrimack College for an 11 a.m. start at the Saint Leo Tennis Complex.
