Lions oust No. 4 Concordia 6-3 in Tuesday showdown

SAINT LEO, Fla. – Rolling to its fifth consecutive victory, the No. 8 Saint Leo men's tennis team upended the No. 4-ranked Concordia College (N.Y.), 6-3, on Tuesday afternoon at the Flagler College Tennis Complex.

The victory pushes the Lions to a 6-1 overall record while the Clippers fall to 1-1 on the season.

The Green and Gold began concluded the doubles round with a 2-1 lead over the fourth-ranked program in Division II.  Saint Leo tandem Netanel Alcabas and Egor Panyushkin defeated Tomasz Olfans and Benas Majauskas by an 8-6 score. The second victory was won by Lions duo Guillaume Vanelven and Fons Verberne, as they pair teamed up to oust Rafael Ferreira and Lorenzo Montegiorgi by an 8-5 set.  The clippers came away with the top flight, as Jui Mao and Ofir Ginat outdueled Alex Theiler and Bruno Sisti a 9-7 mark.

Saint Leo rolled in the singles round, taking three consecutive courts to clinch the match. Panyushkin swept No. 35 Majauskas by 6-1 sets while Vanelven swept his opponent in 6-4 and 6-4 fashion.  Jacobo Gonzalez-Tarrio took the decisive fifth match to win the contest behind a 6-2 and 6-3 tally.  Sisti earned the final point for the Lions, defeating No. 31 Rafael Ferreira by 6-4, 3-6 and 1-0 (11-9) sets.

Mao defeated Theiler in three sets while No. 6 Jusso Ojanen won his matchup over Saint Leo's Alcabas to conclude the match with a 6-3 score in favor of the Lions.

The Lions will return to action on Friday, meeting No. 37 Palm Beach Atlantic on the road on March 6, slated for a 4 p.m. start.
