Lions take 9-0 sweep over Florida Southern

LAKELAND, Fla. – As the newly minted No. 3 team in the South Region, the Saint Leo men's tennis team blanked Florida Southern College, 9-0 on Wednesday afternoon.  With the sweep, the Lions improve to 4-1 on the season with a 2-0 tally in Sunshine State Conference play while the hosting Mocs dip to 0-4 with a 0-1 mark in SSC matchups.

The Green and Gold took a clean sweep of the doubles round, as the duo of Fons Verberne and Jacobo Gonzalez-Tarrio defeated Derek Bell and Blaine Miller (8-5) to conclude the first Saint Leo win.  Reigning SSC Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week Bruno Sisti teamed with Alex Theiler to oust top court tandem, Fabian Lundberg and Laurent Mailoux 9-8 after a 7-3 tie-breaker.

The final doubles matchup went in similar fashion, as Netanel Alcabas and Egor Panyushkin emerged from a tie-break with a 9-8 (7-5) win to sweep doubles and put the Lions up 3-0 heading into the singles round.

Theiler outdueled Arthur Viallaneix in straight-sets (6-1, 6-0) in the top flight while Sisti finished with the second victory of singles action with a pair of 6-1 sets to best Brian Slivonik.   Alcabas battled Lundberg to a tie-breaker, concluding the match with a win.

The remaining three Lions swept their opponents to keep a clean sheet and preserve the 9-0 win.

The Green and Gold will return home to welcome Chestnut Hill on Tuesday, Feb. 24 for a 3 p.m. start.
