Lions well represented in latest ITA regional rankings

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo University tennis teams continue to garner regional attention in the latest rankings release by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, Wednesday Feb. 18th. The men's team jumped from No. 7 in the preseason poll to the No. 3 team in the South Region while the women's squad stands pat with the No. 2 ranking in the regional poll.

The men's squad upset former No. 3 Lynn in its most recent matchup, edging the Fighting Knights by a 5-4 score that came down to a decisive ninth matchup.  Bruno Sisti picked up Sunshine State Conference Athlete of the Week for his efforts against Lynn, teaming up with Alex Theiler to defeat the No. 1 ranked doubles tandem of Daniel Riggs and Poalo Volpicelli.  Sisti also paved the way to a Saint Leo team win, locking the match in a 4-4 tie that came down to the sixth singles matchup.

West Florida remains the top-team in Division II while Barry University sits second in the nation.  Lynn dropped to No. 4 while Valdosta State rounds out the top-5 for the latest ITA release.

The Saint Leo women's team holds the No. 2 ranking, defeating Lynn 6-3 on Sunday afternoon.  In the top court of singles action, Isabella Robbiani upended the No. 1 ranked singles athlete, Valentine Confalonieri by a 6-2, 1-0 (retire) to garner SSC Female Tennis Athlete of the Week.  Robbiani added a doubles victory, playing alongside Maria Benkirane to defeat the Fighting Knights.

Barry's women remain the No. 1 team in the South Region while Lynn sits third for the latest ITA regional rankings.  West Florida and Rollins round out the top-5, respectively.

The men hit the road to face Florida Southern College at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 18 while the women travel to West Palm Beach, Fla. to meet Palm Beach Atlantic on Friday, Feb. 20th at 5 p.m.
