No. 5 Armstrong hands No. 14 Saint Leo first loss

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The No. 14 Saint Leo men's tennis squad fell 7-2 to the hosting No. 5 Armstrong State, Saturday afternoon.  The loss pushes the Lions to a 1-1 overall record on the season while the Pirates start the season 1-0.

The Pirates coasted to victory after sweeping all three doubles matches before taking four in the singles round.

Green and Gold tandem Netanel Alcabas and Egoy Panyushkin fell 8-4 to Fernando Bogajo and Otakar Lucak while fellow ASU duo Pablo Gor and Ignacio Hernandez defeated Bruno Sisti and Alex Theiler 9-8 (9-7).  The hosting Pirates completed the sweep as the No. 1 showdown saw Marek Pesicka and Jan Porteset outlast Guillaume Vanelcen and Fons Verberne by an 8-6 score.

Alcabas sought revenge in singles action, getting the best of No. 18 Hernandez by 6-4, 4-6 (10-7) sets.  Senior Jacobo Gonzalez-Tarrio turned a 4-6, 6-4, (10-6) win over Porteset as the Lions other victor against a strong Armstrong lineup.

The Pirates claimed the remaining draws, as Bogajo bested Theiler, 6-2, 6-1 while Lucak defeated Panyushkin, 7-5, 6-2.  The last two battles saw Gor outlast Verberne, 6-1, 6-1 and Cerin claim victory over Vanelven by 5-7, 6-4 scores with an 11-9 tiebreaker. 

The Lions continue the season facing ABAC on Friday, February 13 at 3 p.m.
