Saint Leo Gets Back to its Winning Ways

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The fourth-ranked Saint Leo men's tennis team got back to its winning ways on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish in a 5-4 south region showdown.  The win advances Saint Leo to a record of 16-4 on the season, while Palm Beach Atlantic drops to a mark of 11-8.

The Lions took a 2-1 lead after doubles, beginning with a the third seeded duo of Ismail Lemtouni and Fons Verberne defeating Asti Adams and Kevin Reifler, 8-6.  PBA answered back with a win in the top flight, with Romain Nowaczyk and Nicolas Uryson earning an 8-3 win over Aloua Adjenak and Bruno Sisti to knot the score at 1-1.

Matt Nicholson Lewis and Victor Lozier claimed the final doubles flight with a hard fought 9-8 (10-6) win over Mark Heimberger and Nicholas Battistini.

Both teams claimed three sets each in singles play, but Saint Leo came out on top thanks to its one points advantage after doubles.

Palm Beach Atlantic took a two point lead as they claimed the top two seeds in singles play. Nowaczyk took a 6-4, 4-0 lead over Adnejak at No. 1 singles before Adjenak retired to give PBA the win to knot the overall score at 2-2.  The Sailfish then took the lead as No. 47 Uryson defeated Sisti in the No. 2 slot, 6-3, 6-1, and Heimberger extended the lead to two with a 6-4, 6-0 win in the third seed over Lozier.

The lions were not about to back down, and fought hard to battle back for the win.  Jacobo Gonzalez-Tarrio brought the Lions back to within one as he defated Battistini 6-1, 7-5 at the No. 5 position, followed by Verberne defeating Matt Leeds at No. 6 singles, 6-1, 6-3 to even the tally at 4-4.

Oskar Nurmio clinched the win for Saint Leo as he defeated Adams, 7-5, 7-5 in the No. 4 slot.

The Saint Leo men's tennis team returns to action on Sunday, April 13, when they travel to Melbourne, Fla. to take on Florida Tech in their final match of the regular season.  Match time against the Panthers is set for 2 p.m.
