No. 8 Lions Defeat 26th Ranked Mocs Despite Delay
SAINT LEO, Fla. – Despite being delayed two days due to inclement weather, the eighth-ranked Saint Leo men's tennis team defeated the 26th-ranked Florida Southern Moccasins by a final score of 6-3 on Friday evening. The win advances Saint Leo to a mark of 3-0 on the season, while Florida Southern opens its 2014 spring campaign with a mark of 0-1.
Friday night's match was a continuation of one that began on Wednesday, only to be postponed by rain before the completion of doubles.
At the restart, Florida Southern's No. 1 doubles duo of Emanuel Lueber and Benoit Paradis took down the combo of Bruno Sisti and Ismail Lemtouni, 8-5. Despite dropping the first flight in doubles action, the Lions grabbed two quick victories as Victor Lozier and Fons Berberne defeated Nathan Leavitt and Carl Lundberg by a tally of 8-3 at No. 2 doubles, while Matt Nicholson-Lewis and Oskar Nurmio earned a win at No. 3 doubles with a final score of 8-3 over Vladimir Barabash and Charles Garneau to finish up doubles with a 2-1 advantage.
The Lions claimed the first victory in singles play, with Lemtouni defeating Paradis, 6-3, 6-3. But the Moccasins were not ready to back down, winning the next two at No. 5 and No. 1 singles, as Barabash took down Nurmio (6-2, 6-1), and Lueber defeated Adjenak (7-5, 6-3) to pull even at 3-3 overall.
Despite the Mocs pulling even, the Lions were not about to back down, winning the final three singles matches, including three-set wins by Lozier over Lundberg (6-3, 3-6, 6-4), and Nicholson-Lewis over Leavitt (6-2, 3-6, 7-5). Jacobo Gonzalez-Tarrio sealed the victory in a close duel at No. 6 singles by defeating Garneau, 7-5, 6-4, to earn the win.
The Saint Leo men's tennis team returns to action on Sunday, February 16, when they take on the Lynn University Fighting Knights. Match time is set for 11 a.m. in Boca Raton, Fla.
