SAINT LEO, Fla. - The eighth-ranked Saint Leo men's tennis team advanced its record to 2-0 as they defeated College of Coastal Georgia by a score of 7-2 on Sunday afternoon as the Saint Leo Tennis Complex. With the loss, Coastal Georgia opens its season with a record of 0-1.
Fons Verberne and Victor Lozier secured the next win, with an 8-6 victory over Erick Bermudez and Malhar Mali at No. 2 doubles. Oskar Nurmio and Matt Nicholoson-Lewis picked up a hard fought win at the No. 3 slot, defeating Alejandro Aquilino and Robin Lucase by a tally of 9-7.
The Mariners bounced back, earning their only two wins on the afternoon by securing the first two victories in singles. Zaatini made quick work of Sisti at No. 2 singles for Coastal Georgia's first win with a 6-3, 6-1 final score.
Volclair took down Aloua Adjenak at No. 1 singles next, earning a score of 6-4, 6-4 to set the overall score at 3-2.
Despite dropping the first two flights in singles play, Saint Leo bounced back, beginning with Lozier taking down Aquilino by a score of 6-0, 6-2 at No. 5 singles. Nicholson-Lewis followed with a heated contest at No. 3 singles, defeating Bermudez by a tally of 7-6(1), 5-7, 6-4.
Lemtouni saw another battle at the No. 4 slot, walking away victorious after a long fight against Mali that ended in a 7-6(6), 6-2 final.
Jacobo Gonzalez-Tarrio secured the Lions' final win of the afternoon, earning a 7-5, 4-6, 10-4 win over Lucase at No. 6 singles.
The Lions return to action on Wednesday, February 12, when they host Florida Southern. Match time against the Moccasins is set for 3:00 p.m.
