WINTER PARK, Fla. – Winning its seventh-straight game and going undefeated in the month of March, the 15th-ranked Saint Leo men's tennis team defeated No. 6 Rollins College 5-4 in Sunshine State Conference action on Wednesday afternoon.
"The guys just dug deep and got the job done today," an elated Coach James Bryce said of his team. "Some played great, others okay, but overall this was a team performance. However, I know we can also play a lot better. Congratulations to the guys, they deserve this one."
Getting things started right, the Lions (12-3) claimed victory in two out of the three doubles matches. At No. 1 doubles, Bruno Sisti and Matt Nicholson-Lewis upset the 17th-ranked duo of Will Kwok and Jason Alabaster, 9-8 (10-1) in one of two flights that most likely determined the outcome of the match. With No. 2 doubles tandem of Victor Lozier and Ismail Lemtouni claiming an 8-4 win and the Tars' lone win coming in the No. 3 spot gave the Lions the lead heading into singles.
Even though Rollins (10-6) went on to win Nos. 1, 2, 3 singles, Saint Leo took the remaining three matches, including another thriller when Jacobo Gonzalez defeated Ari Davis 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) at No. 6 to hold on for the upset.
The Lions now prepare for one of the toughest stretches to open the final month of the regular season. Saint Leo travels to Pensacola for three matches with teams from the Gulf South Conference. The first match is against No. 3 West Florida on Friday, April 5 at noon.
