Tennis Continues Action At C.L. Varner Memorial

WINTER PARK, Fla. – One day after seeing rain interrupt the opening round of the C.L. Varner Memorial (Hosted by Rollins College), the Saint Leo men's and women's tennis teams got back out on the court to take on many of the region' best.  

All matches are taking place at the Rollins College campus, as well as the Azalea Lane Courts in Winter Park, Fla. Matches are being competed at the Bert Martin Tennis Complex (Rollins campus), the Tiedtke Tennis Courts (Rollins campus), as well as the Azalea courts.

On the women's side, the Lions saw a pair of Flight A loses as Adrianna Daszkiewicz dropped her contest to Central Florida's Genevieve Lorberg, 6-2, 6-0, while Emily Singleton had to withdraw from her match.

However, Daszkiewicz rattled-off two consecutive win in the Flight A Consolation bracket asd she dumped Goettsching (6-2, 6-0) and Rizzolo (7-5, 6-2) to reach the consolation semifinals.

Coralie Pesenti fell in her first match of the weekend to Rollins' Rosenberg, 6-2, 6-4. Maria Benkirane, however, defeated Nova Southeastern's Serdyuk, 6-2, 6-0, on Friday, before facing a set-back against UCF's Griffith.

Phoebe Di Leo took down Flagler's Scammaca, 6-2, 6-0 in the consolation bracket of Flight C.

The women's Main Draw Flight A Doubles picture began to be shaped when Benkirane and Pesenti defeated the Division I (UCF) pair of Griffith and Baptista, 9-8(3) on Friday. Unfortunately, the dup faced an 8-1 setback to Lynn's top pair.

The men, meanwhile, began their weekend with impressive victories in each flight. Aloua Adjenak earned a 6-2, 6-1 win over Florida Southern's Lundberg on Friday, before falling to Lynn's Wolfer 6-2, 6-3. Ismail Lentouni also dropped his opening contest to Lynn's Cirla, 6-0, 6-2.  

At the Flight B main draw Jacobo Gonzalez-Tarrio bounced Rollins Alabaster, 7-5, 6-3, but faced a Saturday hiccup against Lynn's Mohja, 6-4, 6-1. Bruno Sisti continued to shine for the Green and Gold as he advanced to the semifinals with a pair of singles wins. In the opener, he beat Florida Southern's Gameau, 6-2, 6-1, and followed it up with a 6-3, 2-0 (ret.) win against Flagler's Stolz.

Despite losing in the opening round of Flight C singles, Jake Fleischer earned a bye in the consolation round.

Fons Verberne, however collected his first collegiate win with a 6-3, 3-6(4) win over Flagler's Lewis.

In the men's Flight A doubles bracket, Lentouni and Sisti upended Leuber and Gameau of Florida Southern, 8-4. The Lions' pair then nearly defeated the UCF tandem of Hromic and Bologna, but fell just short, 8-6.

Verberne and Fleischer were edged out in a tiebreaker by Rollins' Davis and Maxwell, 9-8(9-7), also in Flight A action.

The pair of Adjenak and Gonzalez-Tarrio put the finishing touches on an sensational Saturday as they advanced to the semifinal round of the Flight B doubles bracket after an 8-2 win over the Rollins' team of Borger and Geiger.

The Lions will resume action on Sunday, October 7.
