Men’s Tennis Opens Action at USTA/ITA South Regional Championship

LAKELAND, Fla. – Coming off a men's team championship at the Columbus State Fall Invite, the Saint Leo men's tennis team amassed five wins on the opening day of the USTA/ITA South Region Championships (Hosted by Florida Southern), Thursday afternoon from the Beerman Tennis Center and Warden Complex.

All three singles matches were won by three different athletes, while a pair of teams earned doubles victories, including a near upset of the tournament's top doubles team.

Seeing only one match in the round of 64, all three of the Lions' three singles wins came in the round of 32. Aloua Adjenak earned the first win as he bounced Valdosta State's Sebastian Jasyk in three sets, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4. Matt Nicholson-Lewis posted the next singles victory as he overturned Valdosta State's Tammo Haake in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0. Victor Lozier bookended single competitions with an tranquil two-set win over Rollins' Cooper Maxwell, 6-0, 6-1.

All three advanced to the round of 16 on Friday, while Ismail Lemtouni will compete out of the consolation bracket.

In flight A doubles, the Lions got off on the right foot as Lemtouni and Bruno Sisti teamed-up to oust West Alabama's Anton Ivanov and Adam Drysdale, 8-3. After that very same duo came up just shy of an upset win over Lynn's and the tournament's top pair, Nicholson-Lewis and Lozier joined forces to defeat Alabama-Huntsville's Chris Kano and Raphael Oliveria, 9-8 (7-4).

Nicholson-Lewis and Lozier advanced to the quarterfinals with the victory.

The Lions will return to the court on Friday, September 28, as they continue action at the USTA/ITA South Regional Championship hosted by Florida Southern. The tournament will continue from two tennis facilities; the Beerman Tennis Center and the Warden Tennis Complex.
