COLUMBUS, Ga. – The Saint Leo men's tennis team won the inaugural Columbus State Invitational team championship, winning by percentage points over Shorter, North Georgia and host institution Columbus State, Sunday afternoon from the Blackmon Tennis Center. In total, the Lions registered 27 wins over the course of the three day tournament.
"This was a great start to fall for this team," said head coach James Bryce. "Their confidence is high right now and ready for regionals. Congrats to them, and I hope we can continue our performance in a couple of weeks."
On the doubles side, Bruno Sisti and Jake Fleischer got the Lions rolling with an 8-1 win over CSU's Malicbegovic and Trebbuhow, 8-1. Meanwhile, the tandem of Matt Nicholson-Lewis and Ismail Lemtouni bookended the Lions' doubles portion with an 8-6 victory.
Jacobo Gonzalez-Tarrio and Aloua Adjenak then posted back-to-back singles victories to wrap-up the team championship.Gonzalez-Tarrio won in straight sets 6-2, 6-4, while Adjenak downed Shorter's Ferreria 6-1, 6-2.
The Lions will return to action on Thursday, September 27, when they travel to Lakeland, Fla. to compete in the ITA South Regional.
