No.18 Men’s Tennis Conquers No.23 Florida Southern in SSC Action, 7-2
SAINT LEO, Fla. – The No.18-ranked Saint Leo men's tennis team (13-5, 2-3 SSC) took down the No.23-ranked Florida Southern College Moccasins, 7-2, in Sunshine State Conference action Thursday afternoon from the Saint Leo Tennis Center.
"We played solid today, said Head Coach James Bryce. "We had a good start at doubles and kept that momentum rolling into singles action."
The Lions used a 2-1 doubles performance, in addition to wins out of their top four singles players, to put away the rival Mocs.
Finishing in order, the Lions No.8-ranked doubles tandem of Matt Nicholson-Lewis and Victor Lozier bounced Marevic and Gutierrez, 8-3. After falling at No.2 doubles, the Lions No.3-flight pair of Aloua Adjenak and Jake Fleischer dusted Leavitt and Vladimir Barabash, 8-4.
In singles, the Lions rallied-off four consecutive wins to secure the match. The No.28-ranked Lozier opened the session with a consecutive sets win over Marevic, 6-1, 6-4. Nicholson-Lewis followed up with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No.2 singles, while Jacobo Gonzalez-Torres solidified the match with 6-4, 6-2 win at No.4 singles.
Adjenak battled from a set down to take his match in three sets, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, at the top-flight spot. Fleischer echoed Adjenak's efforts with a three-set super tiebreak win of his own at No.5 singles, 4-6, 6-2, 10-6.
The Lions will return to action on Saturday, March 31, as they host regional foe New Orleans. Doubles is set to begin at 10 a.m. from the Saint Leo Tennis Center.
