SAINT LEO, Fla. – Despite opening the Sunshine State Conference match with 3-0 lead after doubles, the Saint Leo men's tennis team (5-4, 1-3 SSC) fell to No.8-ranked Rollins by the score of 5-4, Tuesday afternoon from the Saint Leo Tennis Center.
After posting a 3-0 advantage following doubles action, the Lions saw the Tars rally-off five-of-six contests in singles action.
The day started off great for the Lions as they took each of the doubles contests in order. No.21-ranked tandem of Matt Nicholson-Lewis and Victor Lozier easily downed the No.24-ranked Rollins' team of Lucas Jovita and Jason Alabaster, 8-3. Jacobo Gonzalez-Tarrio and Antoine Raffaelli took home the win at No.2 doubles, 8-5, while Jake Fleischer and Aloua Adjenak bumped-off their opponents, 8-6.
However, the momentum shifted in singles action as the Tars took matches at No.1 and No.2 singles in straight sets. After the Lions Gonzalez-Tarrio extended the Lions' lead to 4-2, Rollins bounced back by taking matches at five, six, and the eventual-match clincher at No.3 singles.
The Lions will return to the court on Saturday, March 3, when they travel to Florence, Ala. to compete in three south region matches. The Lions will challenge in a rare doubleheader on Saturday as they take on Delta State and North Alabama at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
