SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo University men’s tennis team (4-12, 0-3 SSC) could not overcome a powerful Florida Tech squad (14-6, 2-2 SSC), as they fell 7-2 Sunday afternoon from a soggy SLU Tennis Center.
SLU got off to the tremendous start in doubles action winning two of three matches. The team could not hold on though as Florida Tech collected all six singles wins.
Yves Jacobs and Richard MacLachian jump started the Green and Gold with an exciting 9-8 win at No. 1 doubles. The team went exchanged points with Losmozos and Kirkham for the entire match, but a late rally by the Lions’ duo put the Panthers’ pair on their heels. Jacobs and MacLachian proceeded to nail the deciding ninth point to give the Lions the first point of the day. After Florida Tech pulled even at No. 2 doubles, Jose Morales and Diego Timoteo gave the Lions a 2-1 advantage going into singles play, winning their match 9-7 at No. 3 doubles. In another back and forth match, each team struggled for the advantage. But ultimately the Lions’ tandem prevailed with a two point match win.
Unfortunately for Lions fans, the team was unable to record a victory in singles action. Jacobs did however put on an impressive performance at No. 1 singles as he won his first set 6-3, but fell in the next two sets in very close contests, 7-5 and 10-3.
The men look to rebound Tuesday, March 3 as they travel to Lakeland, Fla. to take on the Florida Southern College Moccasins in another SSC matchup. First serve is set for 3:00 pm.
