SAINT LEO, Fla. - The Saint Leo men’s tennis team came up just short of getting their fourth win of the 2009 season as they fell to the visiting St. Cloud State University Huskies (10-2) by a 5-4 margin on Monday afternoon from the Saint Leo Tennis Facility.
After getting wins at No. 2 and 3 doubles, the Lions took a 2-1 advantage into the singles competition where they ran into trouble.
The Lions (3-9) needed three wins out of the six singles competitions, but could only muster victories with Pablo Chavez at No. 1 (6-2, 6-4) and Richard Maclachlan at No. 3 (6-0, 6-3).
The closest match ultimately was the deciding No. 5 singles showdown between SLU’s Jose Morales and SCSU’s Shane Ecklund. The two competitors split the first two sets by equal 6-2 scores and then had to go to the super-tiebreak in the deciding set, which Ecklund pulled out by the slimmest of margins at 7-6 and posted the 7-3 break.
After this disappointment, the Lions will try and regroup as they face Division I opponents in the University of Indianapolis on Tuesday afternoon. The match will get underway at 3:00 p.m. at the SLU Tennis Facility.
