Winter Park, Fla. (April 11, 2008) – The Saint Leo men’s tennis (3-13, 0-6 SSC) team dropped their fourth consecutive SSC match Friday afternoon at the Bert Martin Tennis Complex to the No.9 Rollins College Tars (14-4) by the score of 8-1.
The Lions picked up their lone point of the afternoon in doubles competition. The Lions No. 2 duo of Pablo Chavez (Fr., Margarita, Venezuela) and Michael DelPriore (Sr., Englewood, Fla.) preserved a hard fought 8-6 victory over the Tars pair of Gustavo Carvalho and Pablo Seijo. Saint Leo fell in its other two doubles matches of the day, as the Lions No. 1 pair of Brandon Stacey (Sr., Galesburg, Ill) and Saif Noorsumar (Sr., Karachi, Pakistan) dropped their match to No. 13 Brian Compton and Jonathan Gomez 8-2. Tars teammates, Adrian Tan and Austin Duvall, shutout the Lions duo of Diego Timoteo (So., Brazil) and Andrew Sheets (Jr., Alphetta, Ga.) 8-0.
The Tars finished off the match with a sweep of singles action. Jonathan Gomez of Rollins defeated the Lions No. 1 singles player Pablo Chavez 6-3, 6-3. In the No. 2 singles position, Tan rolled past Stacey 6-0, 6-0. Noorsumar lost to Seijo in two –sets 6-2, 6-2. The Tars’ Duvall wore-out the DelPriore 6-3, 6-1 in the No. 4 singles spot. The Lions Timoteo battled in the first set but eventually dropped the set and the match 6-4, 6-1 to Albin Hubscher in the No. 5 position. The Tars’ Jason Hamidi won by default over Sheets finalizing the Tars’ victory.
The Lions return to the court in their non-conference regular-season finale Monday, April 14 at the SLU Tennis Center against Palm Beach Atlantic. The match is set to begin at 3:30 p.m.
