Men’s swimming upended by Tampa, 134-128

TAMPA, Fla. – Saint Leo men's swimming won 10 out of 14 events and charted a pair of NCAA "B" standard qualifying times, but the host University of Tampa squad brought its depth into play and managed to eke out a 134-128 win over the Lions, Friday afternoon at the UT Aquatic Center.

Sophomore Lucas Dengler-Harles logged a "B" standard qualifier in the 1000 Freestyle with a first-place time of 9:20.06. Dengler-Harles picked up another first-place finish in the 100 Freestyle, winning the event after touching the wall in 46.00 seconds.

Junior Jan Urbaniak also recorded an NCAA "B" standard qualifying time in the 500 Freestyle with a winning time of 4:36.29. The win was one of two on the day by Urbaniak, who also captured the 200 Butterfly with a time of 1:56.40.

Juniors Hunter Bains and Milosz Mikicin and freshman Henrik Dahrendorff each won two individual events during the afternoon.

Bains triumphed in the 200 Free with a time of 1:43.85, and picked up another win in the 200 Backstroke after stopping the clock in 1:52.64. Mikicin came away victorious in the 100 Backstroke with a time of 50.94, and won the 100 Butterfly with a mark of 51.01. Finally, Dahrendorff captured the 100 Breaststroke and 200 Breaststroke events with times of 58.20 and 2:07.33 respectively. He also was the top Saint Leo finisher in the 200 Individual Medley, hitting the wall in 1:58.14 for third place.

In the relay events, the Saint Leo team of Bains, Luka Vulic, Mikicin, and Dengler-Harles won the 400 Free Relay with a time of 3:04.96.

Saint Leo men's swimming has nearly two weeks to prepare for its next event – the 2017 Sunshine State Conference Swimming Championships in Orlando, Fla. Competition in the SSC championship meet begins on Thursday, Feb. 16.
