Bains tabbed as CollegeSwimming.com Swimmer of the Week

SAINT LEO, Fla. – Saint Leo men's swimmer Hunter Bains was named the CollegeSwimming.com Division II Men's National Swimmer of the Week on Wednesday, for his performances last weekend against mostly Division I competition.

Competing at the Colorado Mesa Intermountain Shootout against Utah, Brigham Young, Air Force, and the host squad from Colorado Mesa, Bains posted a pair of NCAA "B" cut times.

Bains posted a "B" cut time of 1:39.45 in Friday evening's 200 Freestyle race and finished second in the race. With the altitude adjustment, Bains' time was reduced to 1:38.25 for NCAA qualification purposes.

In Saturday's 100 Freestyle race, Bains recorded another second-place finish with a "B" cut time of 45.61, which received an altitude adjustment to 45.51.

"With the altitude adjustment, Hunter is a half-second faster than he was at any point last year, and I don't know if those times will get him into the NCAAs, but it certainly gets him on the bubble. For sure his improvement is evident of the hard work he has put in already this season," said Paul Mangen, Saint Leo's head swim coach. "

"He's a captain, so he's assuming leadership in and out of the pool. He's just a great example of a hard-working and blue-collar kid. I'm looking forward to seeing what he does this weekend," added Mangen.

Earlier this week, the junior from Monument, Colo., was tabbed with Sunshine State Conference Men's Swimmer of the Week honors for just the second time in his career. The last Saint Leo swimmer to earn the national accolade from CollegeSwimming.com was Pawel Trenda on November 25, 2015.

The entire Saint Leo men's swimming team will be in action this Friday, Oct. 14, when the Lions travel to Boca Raton, Fla., to compete against Florida Tech. The Saint Leo women's swim team will compete in a double-dual format against both the Panthers and the host squad from Lynn University.
