SSC Championships Day One: Martinez Takes Home First Place Finish in 1000 Yard Free

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Saint Leo men's and women's swim teams both sit in sixth place after the opening day of the 2014 Sunshine State Conference Swimming Championships.  Highlighting the day was a first place finish by junior Stephanie Martinez in the women's 1000 Yard Freestyle event as the women finished day one with 47 points, and the men earned a total of 38 points on the day.

Martinez touched first in the 1000 Free to kick off the 2014 Championship meet, touching with a time of 10:14.55, just one second off of the SSC Meet record of 10:13.45 set in 2013.  Kaitlyn Hite finished the event in 10:52.04, good for 16th, while Megan McGowan and Lindsay Albanese earned 22nd and 23rd, respectively with times of 11:12.20, and 11:25.46.

In the men's 1000 Yard Free, Dillon Kasson led the way for the Lions as he finished with a time of 10:02.50, good for 15th overall.  Valentin Lenz and Niclas Bez touched with times of 11:07.64, and 11:25.47, respectively, good for 17th and 18th place.

The relay team of Martinez, Nicole Weber, Chantal Bouthillier, and Hite pulled in a sixth place time of 7:57.58 in the Women's 800 Yard Freestyle Relay A Finals.  Following suit, the Men's 800 Yard Freestyle Relay team of Rhet Rheinlander, Jan Dahrendorff, Michael Marino, and Kasson earned a fifth place finish, picking up a time of 7:06.41 in the A Finals.

The B Finals of the Men's 800 Yard Free Relays saw the team of Justin Wulff, Lenz, Bez, and Jackson Hall pull in 14th overall with a time of 7:32.01.

The Saint Leo men's and women's swim teams return to action Thursday, February 20, for the preliminary rounds of the 500 Yard Freestyle, 200 Yard IM, and 50 Yard Freestyle events.  Preliminary rounds are slated to begin at 10 a.m. at the Orlando YMCA Aquatic Center.  Fans will be able to catch all of the action live on the Saint Leo Sports Network at
