ORLANDO, Fla. – Saint Leo sophomore Matheus Assis Set a new Saint Leo, Sunshine State Conference Championship and overall conference record as he took home the top time in the Men's 50-Yard Freestyle event on Thursday evening from the Orlando YMCA Aquatic Center. After a full day of action on the second day of the SSC Championships, both the Saint Leo University men's and women's teams finished in fifth place, overall. The women concluded day two in fifth place with a total of 149 points, while the men's squad earned a fifth place total of 122.
The Lions kicked off the day with the Women's 200 Yard Freestyle Relay team of Paula Carvajal, Rachel Cunio, Kaitlyn Hite, and Bianca Muniz setting a new program best with a time of 1:38.73, good for fifth place.
The Men's 200 Yard Free Relay squad of Assis, Gabe Keown, Patrick Ceddia, and Milton Alberto-Requejo earned second place, posting a time of 1:20.68, which was just .05 seconds off of the school record placed at last season's NCAA Championships. The Lions' time was also better than the original SSC Championship meet record, but was not enough to surpass the University of Tampa squad who recorded a new SSC best with a time of 1:20.26.
Stephanie Martinez picked up sixth in the 500 Yard Free, touching with a time of 5:05.38 after setting a new school record earlier in the day during the preliminary rounds where she finished with a time of 5:03.63 for a Division II B qualifying time.
Nicole Weber picked up a third place finish in the Women's 200 Yard IM, setting a new school record with a B qualifying time of 2:05.49. In the B Finals of the 200 Yard IM, Chantal Bouthillier and Carvajal finished 14th and 15th, respectively, hitting the wall with times of 2:13.28 and 2:14.60.
Muniz took home 15th in the Women's 50 Yard Free, finishing with a time of 24.96. Joining Assis in the Men's 50 Yard Free were Keown and Alberto-Requejo, who finished fifth and 15th. Keown touched at the 20.65 mark, while Alberto-Requejo finished in 21.03.
Wrapping up the evening, the Women's 400 Yard Medley Relay team of Bouthillier, Weber, Alyssa Black, and Muniz took home fifth place with a team time of 3:56.85. The B finals of the event saw the team of Hite, Cunio, Chloe Pellican, and Carvajal finish in 4:06.64 for 12th overall.
