SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo men's swim team held its own against No. 1 Florida Southern, but the visitors pulled away in the late events to claim a 143-119 win in Sunshine State Conference swimming action at the Bowman Aquatics Center on Friday evening.
The Lions were able to keep the meet close in the early stages, to the point where Saint Leo pulled even with the visitors from Lakeland, but the Moccasins managed to put three consecutive 1-2 finishes on the board as the meet wound down to pull away.
Despite the team setback to the Mocs, statistically the top-ranked team in Division II, the Lions still picked up quality wins from some key contributors in the meet.
Vashaad Fincher (27.48) and Jose De Jesus (28.42) went 1-2 in the 50 Breast while Matheus Assis claimed a top finish in the 100 Fly, touching with a time of 50.57. Milton Alberto-Requejo finished atop the medal stand in the 50 Free with a time of 21.37 and Assis again claimed victory with a 46.10 touch in the 100 Free, almost half a second quicker than his competition.
Pawel Trenda kept the winning going for the Lions with a victory in the 100 Back behind a time of 50.72 and Fincher claimed the victory in the 100 Breast at 1:00.17. In total, Saint Leo swimmers stood atop the podium in six consecutive events in the middle of the 28-event meet.
As has become an expectation amongst fans, both Saint Leo 'A' Relay teams took home victories with the group of Trenda, Fincher, Assis and Alberto-Requejo claiming the 200 Medley Relay behind a time of 1:33.54, trouncing their competition by almost three seconds.
The same foursome, only in a different order, picked up the win in the day's final event, the 200 Free Relay behind a time of 1:23.56. That finishing time was over four seconds faster than second place.
Without much rest, the Lions will hit the road for their next meet as they travel to Rollins on Saturday. Saint Leo will face the Tars in a Sunshine State Conference meet starting at 1:00 p.m. in Winter Park.
