WINTER PARK, Fla. - Saint Leo freshman Pawel Trenda has been named Sunshine State Conference Men's Swimmer of the Week presented by VALIC, it was announced Monday by SSC Commissioner Jay Jones.
It's the second time Trenda has earned the award this year, and the fifth Saint Leo men's swimmer to collect SSC POW honors.
Trenda, hailing from Oswiecim, Poland, logged five individual victories and three relay wins while accumulating a host of program records and NCAA-qualifying times at the SCAD Invitational, where the Lions placed third out of seven teams.
Trenda turned in a Division II automatic qualifying time of 3:54.72 in the 400 IM, downing the reigning 400 IM national champion for the win. His mark was the fastest in the league this year and shattered the program record by 11 seconds. Trenda also took gold, set a new program record, and posted an NCAA "B" standard time in the 200 backstroke (1:47.96), 200 breaststroke (2:03.06), and the 200 IM (1:49.17). His time in each of those events was tops in the SSC this fall. He also clocked a couple of "B" standard times swimming the leadoff leg in two relay events. In the 800 freestyle relay, Trenda set the table for a Lion victory by posting a time of 1:39.95 in his 200-yard leg, setting a program record. In a runner-up finish by the 400 medley relay team, Trenda's 100 backstroke time of 49.88 set yet another Lions' record and made the NCAA's "B" cut standard.
As if those achievements weren't impressive enough, Trenda gathered a "B" cut time of 48.69 in a timed trial for the 100 butterfly. He also joined the 400 freestyle relay squad for gold with a school-record time of 3:02.25. In total, Trenda left the SCAD Invitational with one individual automatic qualifying time, six individual "B" standard marks, and five "B" standard relay times.
In total, 14 Saint Leo student-athletes have earned SSC POW considerations in 2012-13.
The Lions will return to the pool again on Monday, December 31, as they close-out the 2012 portion of their schedule with a neutral site dual meet with Pfeiffer University. Meet time is set for 11:00 a.m. from Ft. Myers. Fla.
