Olson Takes to Starting Blocks at NCAA Division II Swimming Championship
SAINT LEO, Fla. – With the 2012 NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Championships less than 24 hours away, the Saint Leo community has all eyes on Tim Olson. Olson, a senior from Land O'Lakes, Fla., became the first ever men's swimmer to qualify for the DII Championship, which will be held Wednesday, March 14 – Saturday, March 17, at the Mansfield ISD Natatorium in Mansfield, Texas.
Earning an invite in the 100-Yard Freestyle event, Olson will also have the opportunity to compete in the 50-Yard Freestyle, 200-Yard Freestyle, and 100-Yard Butterfly events throughout the week. The 50-Free is slated to take place on Wednesday, March 14, while the 100-Fly and 200-Free is set for Thursday, March 15. Lastly, the 100-Free is scheduled for Saturday, March 17. For each day of the NCAA Championship, trials will be held at 11:30 a.m. (EST) and the finals will be contested at 7 p.m. (EST).
It's been a long road for Olson in his four years with the Lions, but one filled with plenty of success and accomplishments. Currently the school record holder in the 50-Free, 100-Free, 100-Fly, 200-IM, and 200-Fly, Olson is no stranger to victory in the water. Along with his individual records, he has also been a member of all five relay teams that set new program bests while securing NCAA "B" cut times.
Named Sunshine State Conference Swimmer of the Week twice in his senior campaign, Olson ranked third overall in the individual standings against some of the toughest competition in the nation. A total of 51 student-athletes will be representing four SSC member institutions at this year's championships, including 28 men's swimmers. Florida Southern, Nova Southeastern, Tampa, and Saint Leo will all have at least one representative in this year's competition.
