Olson Sets SSC Record in 100-Free on Final Day of Conference Championships

CLEARWATER, Fla. – Saint Leo men's swimming senior Tim Olson closed out his Sunshine State Conference career on a high note, claiming a new conference record in the 100-Yard Freestyle event on Saturday afternoon at the Long Center in Clearwater, Fla.

The Lions finished the SSC Championships in fourth place with a total of 445 points.  Nova Southeastern claimed the top spot with 908 points, followed by Florida Southern in second with 827.  Tampa took third, pulling in 758 points over the course of the four day event.  Saint Leo bested Rollins, who finished fifth, by 162 points, with Florida Tech claiming the final spot 80 points behind the Tars with 203.

Olson earned notable finishes throughout the four day event, but none as memorable as his record-setting swim in the 100-Free on the final day of competition.  The Land O'Lakes, Fla. native touched with a time of 44.92, good for an NCAA "B" standard.  The win was the second of the week for Olson, as he also took home a top finish on day two, touching with a "B" cut time of 20.65 in the 50-Yard Freestyle.

The final day of competition was a busy one for the Lions. Michael Cozzi secured a NCAA "B" time of 16:00.43 in the 1650-Yard Freestyle, good for sixth on the day.  Kieran Advena (18"05.82), Sean Morris (18:28.55), and Charles Arliss (1950.98), took 12th, 13th, and 14th, respecvtively.

In the 200-Breaststroke, Rhet Rheinlander pulled in a time of 1:54.60, good for ninth.  Teammates Troy Beck (1:59.52), Advena (2:13.48), Morris (2:17.57), Arliss (2:18.50), and Luigi Zenere (2:20.99) took 12th through 16th, respectively in the finals.

Behind Olson in the 100-Free, Gabe Keown secured a sixth-place finish with a NCAA "B" time of 45.77.  A total of six swimmers, including Keown, completed the 100-Free with times faster than the old conference record of 45.90, with Olson blowing the previous mark out of the water with his big finish.

In the 200-Yard Backstroke, Derek Maddigan and Carl Roycroft finished back-to-back.  Maddigan's seventh-place time of 2:07.90 was good for "B" standards, with Roycroft touching with a time of 2:08.87 in eighth.  Michael Marino rounded out the Lions participation in the 200-Breaststroke with a 14th place finish, touching the wall at 2:14.53.

Joe Simpson earned an 11th place touch in the 200-Yard Butterfly, finishing the event in 1:59.24, concluding the Lions' individual swims for the afternoon.

The Championships concluded with the 400-Yard Freestyle Relay, which saw two Lions' squads partake.  In the A Final, the Lions' foursome of Michael Cozzi, Roycroft, Beck, and Marino earned a fifth-place finish with a time of 3:13.41.  Advena, Arliss, Morris, and Zenere brought in a 13th place time of 3:36.92 to close out the evening.
