TAMPA, Fla. – The Saint Leo University women’s swimming team arrived to the New Tampa YMCA and finished in fourth place in the SLU Invitational on Saturday morning.
The Lions, coming off a week of extensive training to bring in the New Year, finished with 381 points, just 10 points out of third and 19 points out of second-place Florida Southern. The meet’s eventual champion, Mesa State University from Grand Junction, Colorado, ran away with the meet as the scored an amazing 816 points.
The Lions, who did not come out on top in any of their 14 races, still had some respectable finishes on the day.
The Lions started off the day finishing second in the 200 IM relay with Alisha Adams and Mary Strand combining for a 2:03.71 finish, just three seconds behind Mesa State.
Adams and Mindy Pierce took medalist honors in the 200 backstroke as well as they finished second and third with times of 2:20.06 and 2:23.77. Erin Hotchkiss and Jessica Pall also finished on bronze medalist stand with finishes in the 500 free and 200 IM respectively.
After playing host, the Lions now travel to the University of Tampa to participate in a Sunshine State Conference tri-meet against the Spartans, and Rollins College. The meet is scheduled to get underway at 11:00 a.m. in Tampa, Fla.
