Winter Park, Fla. (November 3, 2007) – The Saint Leo men’s and women’s swim team competed in the Sunshine State Relay Carnival Saturday afternoon. Neither team was able to record a win but did have multiple strong showings. The other participating teams were Rollins College, University of Tampa, Florida Southern and University of Central Florida.

The Lions’ women highest showing came in the third event of the day in the Women 300 Yard Backstroke Relay, as the team of Kirsten Schroeter (So., Ocean, N.J.), Mindy Pierce (Fr., Germany) and Erin Lucas (So., Steubenville, Ohio) finished with a time of 3:20.17 just behind Tampa for a second place finish.

The Lions’ women also finished with five third-place victories including the 800 Yard Freestyle Relay, 300 Yard Butterfly Relay, 500 Yard Freestyle Relay, 1500 Yard Freestyle Relay and finished just nine seconds off the pace in the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay.

The Lions’ men also established themselves with strong second place finish in the 300 Yard Backstroke Relay, as the team of Tim Olson (Fr., Land O’Lakes, Fla.) Brian Kiessling (So., Mt. Pleasant, N.C.) and Matt Szabunio (Fr., Tampa, Fla.) finished with a time of 2:54.31, just four seconds off of the lead Pace set by a Tampa trio.

Four other men’s teams were able to finish third with none of those finishes being more than 11 seconds off of the lead. The closest race being the 300 Yard Butterfly Relay, as the trio of men finished just seven seconds off the lead. The 200 Yard Freestyle and two 400 Yard Medley’s were the other third-place finishes for Saint Leo.
