Orlando, Fla. (February 18, 2008) – The Saint Leo University men’s and women’s swim teams used record-setting times and individual achievements to finish third at the 2008 Sunshine State Collegiate Swimming Championships in Orlando, Fla. this past weekend.

Julie Carusone (So., High Springs, Fla.) led the way for the women with six National Qualifying standards (100-200 Freestyle, 100-200 Breaststroke, 200-400 Individual Medley)

Carusone’s record-setting day, included winning the women’s 200 and 400 Individual Medley and the 200 breaststroke, while also leading off the women’s winning 800 Freestyle relay. Her time in the 200 Breaststroke of 2:20.18 was a new conference record and the fastest time in the nation going into the NCAA Division II nationals next month (March 12 – 15 hosted by the University of Missouri).  Carusone will also swim the 200 Individual Medley (Ranked #2 nationally), 100 breast (Ranked #6 nationally) and 400 Individual (ranked #5 nationally).

Alisha Adams (Fr., Conway, S.C.) won the women’s 100 backstroke in 59.89, and was 3rd in the 200 back with national qualifying B times.

Other podium finishers were Kristen Stahl (Jr., Middle Town, N.J.) who finished third in the 400 individual medley, Erin Hotchkiss (So., Tampa, Fla.) who finished second in the 500 Freestyle, second in the 1000 Freestyle, along with a second and third-place finish in the 200 Butterfly.

The women’s 800 freestyle relay of Carusone, Adams, Hotchkiss and Jessica Pall (Fr., Osprey, Fla.) took the gold over University of Tampa by breaking the eight-minute barrier in 7:59.75, and runner–up in the 200-400 Medley and 400 Freestyle relays.

On the men’s side Tim Olson (Fr., Land O’Lakes, Fla.) led the way by winning the 100 freestyle and 200 Individual Medley and was fifth in 100 Butterfly all with National qualifying B time standards. Olson became the first male Lion swimmer to win a Sunshine State Collegiate Championship individual title, joined by Matt Attal (Fr., Tampa, Fla.) who won the men’s 1000 Freestyle and was third in the 500 Freestyle.

Other podium finishers were Donald Maclary who was second in the 100 Breaststroke and Matt Szabunio (Fr., Tampa, Fla.) who finished second in the 50 Freestyle.  The record-breaking weekend for the men concluded with second-place finishes in the 200 Freestyle and 400 Medley.

The Lions once again established new school records during the 2008 Sunshine State Collegiate Swimming Championships:
