No. 10 Lions Defeat Visiting Fla. Southern Mocs, 2-1
SAINT LEO, Fla. – The No. 10 Saint Leo men's soccer team (9-1-1, 3-0-1 SSC) collected yet another victory Saturday night as they defeated the visiting Florida Southern Mocs (2-7, 2-3 SSC) by a 2-1 score. The win signaled the Lions 9th win of the season as well as another Sunshine State Conference win.
Despite a battle on the field, the Lions struck first to take a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute. A run by junior Lukas Cramer left him with a wide open shot that found the back of the net quickly and easily.
With the game in favor of Saint Leo, the Mocs rebounded, scoring a goal in the 40th minute to tie the game at 1-1. It was the Mocs' James Gibson who connected with the ball off of a corner kick assist from Jonathan Radvogin.
With the first 45 minutes of play under their belts, the Saint Leo and Florida Southern squads headed into halftime tied at one goal apiece.
The first and second halves featured a tough physical battle, as both teams fought for victory. A total of thirty fouls occurred throughout the contest.
The defining play of the match came in the 62nd second minute, when senior captain Edgar Herrera was fouled inside the Florida Southern box and awarded a penalty kick. Stepping in to take the penalty kick was junior Lukas Cramer, who blasted the ball past a diving Moccasin goalkeeper for the game-winning goal.
Cramer collected both goals on the evening, contributing to the Lions' 11 total shots and four shots on goal.
The Saint Leo goalkeeper, sophomore Manuel Shoenhuber, recorded two saves in the effort.
The Lions will return to action on Tuesday, October 22 when they take a local road trip to Tampa, Fla. to battle the University of Tampa Spartans. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
