Lions Stay Hot with Shutout Win over Delta State
PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Saint Leo men's soccer team kept their hot streak going to start the season as the Lions shut out Delta State en route to a 3-0 neutral site victory on Sunday afternoon. The win keeps the Lions undefeated to start the season as they are now 2-0. Delta State is left searching for their first victory of 2013 as they are now 0-3.
The Lions' Javiem Blanchette broke the scoreless tie in the 27th minute in a game played on the campus of the University of West Florida. Blanchette controlled a deflected entry pass into the box and blasted it into the net to put the Lions' ahead.
Maximilian Schulze-Geisthovel added his first contributions of the 2013 season when one of his four shots hit true, giving the Lions a two-goal advantage. Henry Adu would cap the scoring for Saint Leo in the 76th minute off a corner kick that he redirected in from the near post.
The story of the 90 minutes sat with the Saint Leo defense and goalkeeper Manuel Schoenhuber. In registering back-to-back shutouts following his 1-0 clean sheet over West Florida on Friday, the sophomore stonewalled the Lions' opponents racking up six saves. Delta State fired 12 shots toward the Saint Leo goal, but only six were between the posts and all were stuffed by Schoenhuber.
Coming back to Saint Leo after picking up two impressive wins, the journey does not get any easier for the Lions as they now turn their attention to a non-conference meeting with Florida Southern in Lakeland on Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
