SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo men's soccer team (6-7) dropped a non-conference, double overtime contest to the No.2-ranked Lynn University Fighting Knights by the score of 2-1, Saturday evening from University Soccer Field.
Despite tying the nationally-ranked Fighting Knights late in the second half, it was the foot of Jake Furman that dashed the Lions' hopes as he found the game-winner in the 102nd minute.
Competing in a first half that saw Lynn outshoot Saint Leo 9-0, the Lions kept the normally potent Fighting Knights' offense off the board for the opening 45 minutes.
Manuel Schoenhuber anchored the Lions' defense in the opening stanza with five saves. In total, the freshman amassed eight saves.
Despite the strong showing, the Lions' defense suffered their first blemish early in the second half as Michael O'Neill headed the volley into the right corner of the net off a feed from Michael Kutscher.
The 1-0 advantage held for 32 minutes until Saint Leo struck with the equalizer.
Saint Leo capped the late-game momentum swing in the 79th-minute when Frank Bayabanen took a defender deep into the right corner before lofting a ball over the top of the Fighting Knights' defense and having it headed home by the leaping freshman Josh Davis. It is Davis' first goal since the season-opener in which he converted a hat trick.
The game remained tied at one through the remainder of regulation and the first extra time session, but Lynn soon prevailed early in the second extra session. On the winner, Heiko Eberhardt drove to the left edge of the box and slotted a pass back up top to a trailing Furman who punched home the final tally.
In total, the Lions were outshot 21-3. Lynn also held a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Saint Leo will close out the regular season on Thursday, October 25, when they travel to Tampa, Fla. to battle the University of Tampa Spartans in non-conference action.
