Men's Soccer Captures Double Overtime Win Over Florida Southern

LAKELAND, Fla. – The Saint Leo men's soccer team (6-4-0, 3-3-0 SSC) defeated conference foe Florida Southern (2-8-1, 1-3 SSC), Thursday night from Barnett Field in double overtime. The 2-1 win continues a two-game win streak as the Lions prepare for the end of the season's conference play with a pivotal three points.

The Mocs scored quickly in the contest when Florida Southern's Carlos Rodriguez received a pass inside the box and sent the ball flying past the hands of Saint Leo's goalkeeper, Manuel Shoenhuber, in the 15th minute. Florida Southern's Mitchell Francois and Clay Clingerman combined for a double assist on the play.

After halftime, the Lions were able to answer back and tie the score when Saint Leo's Edgar Herrera lined up for a free kick at the top of the box and made a short pass back to Viktor Wikner, who connected with the ball and drove it into the back of the net in the 46th minute.

The Lions peppered the Mocs' goalkeeper for the remainder of the half but could not break the goal line prior to the end of regulation.

After a stalemate in the first overtime, the Lions were able to crack the Mocs pressure during the second overtime period.  Just as time was about to expire in the 109th minute, Saint Leo's Frank Bayabenen and Sean McFarlane combined for an assist as they connected with Aaron Gendreau in the box, who then blasted the ball past the hands of the Florida Southern goalkeeper, Brent Theriaul for the game-winner. It's his fourth career game-winner and second goal scored of the year.

"It was a well-deserved SSC win," said head coac Keith Fulk. "We battled and deserved the victory. I'm very happy, but we must recover quickly for Saturday night's game against Rollins."

The Saint Leo Lions dominated the contest on offense, tallying twenty-one shots and eight corner kicks throughout the game, while both teams combined for a total of twenty-six fouls and six off-sides.

The Lions will resume Sunshine State Conference action on Saturday, October 13, when they travel to Winter Park, Fla. to challenge the rival Rollins Tars. Kickoff is set for 5:00 p.m.
