Lions Drop Double Overtime Contest with PBA, 1-0

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Saint Leo men's soccer team (4-4) fell to regional foe Palm Beach Atlantic (7-1), Saturday afternoon from Magic Jack Field in double overtime. It's the third consecutive 1-0 loss for the Lions, and second consecutive extra time defeat.

Playing down a man for the majority of the contest, the Lions' nearly forced a draw, but a 105th minute goal in the second overtime session handed Saint Leo the tough defeat.

PBA set the tone early as their offensive aggressiveness pressed the Lions defenders from the opening minutes. The Sailfish peppered Lions' goalkeeper Manuel Schoenhuber with eight shots, forcing him to make a first half season-high five saves.

Still, the Lions' freshman keeper, the reigning Sunshine State Conference Defensive Player of the Week, kept the high-scoring Palm Beach offense off the board heading into the locker room.

The second half featured more of the same from the Palm Beach Atlantic offense as they forced Schoenhuber to equal his first half save output. That, along with a strong effort from the Saint Leo back four, kept the Sailfish scoreless in regulation.

After a stalemate in the first overtime, the Sailfish possession and pressure finally cracked the Lions' defense. PBA's AJ Black, after receiving a through ball from Evan Singler, slotted the ball past the outstretched hands of Schoenhuber (4-4) to end the golden goal period.

The two teams combined for 32 fouls, while PBA held a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks and a 19-7 shot advantage.

The Lions are now 4-4 lifetime against the Sailfish, while falling to 0-3 in overtime contests this season.

The Lions will resume Sunshine State Conference action on Wednesday, October 3, when they travel to Lakeland, Fla. to challenge rival Florida Southern. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
