Men's Soccer Falls to Florida Tech in Conference Play

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo University men's soccer team (4-2, 2-2 SSC) fell to the Florida Tech Panthers (5-0-2, 2-0-1 SSC) in Sunshine State Conference action Saturday from Rick Stottler Field by a score of 1-0.

The Lions, who just four days before handed the No. 8 Tampa Spartans their first loss of the season, were unable to recover from the Panthers lone second half goal as they fell to .500 in conference.

During a scoreless first half, Saint Leo and Florida Tech went head to head on offense and defense, with the Lions tallying five shots compared to the Panthers' seven.

After halftime expired, the conference contest became increasingly more intense, with both teams combining for a total of three yellow cards.

The first and only goal of the match came when Florida Tech's Robbie Russell sent a long throw-in to Ricky Menendez, who was able to send a header past the fingers of Saint Leo goalkeeper Manuel Schoenhuber in the 58th minute.

Despite the Lions making a final push on keeper Brentton Muhammad, the Panthers held the lead until the final moments, even after Saint Leo's Sean McFarlane attempted a shot with under a minute to go in the contest. Schoenhuber's record dropped to 4-2 with the afternoon defeat, although he tallied 3 saves in the match.

The men's soccer team will return to play on Wednesday, September 26 from Saint Leo University field when they take on the Eckerd Tritons in their fifth consecutive conference game of the season. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.
