Men’s Soccer Bounces Palm Beach Atlantic in Offensive Battle, 4-2

SAINT LEO, Fla. – Behind a four goal effort, including two by Joel Purkiss, the Saint Leo men's soccer team (6-3-0) upended the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish (5-4-0), 4-2, Tuesday evening from University Soccer Field. The south region win snaps the Lions two game losing streak.

The Lions opened the contest with a pair of unassisted goals during the eighth and 18th-minute, before Palm Beach Atlantic tied the contest with two goals early in the second half. Saint Leo rallied, however, as a pair of Purkiss blasts gave the Lions the crucial victory.

It was the start to the game the Lions had been looking for as Edgar Herrera took advantage of a loose ball inside the box and buried it into the lower right net for the breakthrough goal in the eighth minute.

Defender Eishun Yoshida followed the Herrera tally with one of his own in the 18th-minute. Yoshida lofted his deflected 25-yard blast just under the crossbar to give the Lions a 2-0 advantage.

Despite the 2-0 halftime lead, Palm Beach Atlantic came out of the half on fire and cut the lead in half in the 48th-minute behind a Michael Emert goal.

The Sailfish tied it at two moments later as a handball inside the box led to a converted penalty attempt in the 52nd-minute.

The 54th-minute began the Purkiss scoring barrage. After fighting his way into the box, the Sheffield, England native fought through a pair of defenders to score the eventual game-winner.

Purkiss later capped the Lions' scoring in the 80th-minute when he sent a rocket towards goal that the 'keeper could not handle.

After allowing two early goals in the second half McKenzey Scott settled to post five saves in 90 minutes of action. The Cape May, NJ native improved his mark to 6-3 on the season.

The two offensive juggernauts tied the each other with 15 shots apiece, while Palm Beach Atlantic held a 6-2 advantage in the corner kick department.

Saint Leo will return to the field on Saturday, October 8, as they host Sunshine State Conference foe Lynn University. Kickoff for the south region contest is set for 7:00 p.m. For the latest news, information, and updates on the men's soccer team, visit SaintLeoLions.com.
