Men's Soccer Earns First Clean Sheet; Drops Newberry, 3-0
NEWBERRY, SC –The Saint Leo men's soccer team (3-0) collected its third-straight win to start the 2011 season as they collected their first clean sheet of the year in a 3-0 defeat of Newberry College, Friday afternoon from Newberry Soccer Field.
In what turned into a defensive battle, Saint Leo received a quick start from Purkiss as he took a one touch pass from Gendreau inside the box and found the back right of the net. It was the first of two assists for the forward.
Herrera followed the Purkiss tally in the 18th-minute as he raced around the left edge of the area, collected a pass in-stride from Gendreau, and rocketed his team-leading third goal of the year into the back of the Wolves' net to give the Lions a 2-0 advantage.
Da Silva punched home the third and final goal in the Lions' victory with a tally in the 84th-minute as he chipped a Purkiss pass over the head of the 'keeper.
In net, McKenzey Scott improved to 3-0 behind a four save performance. It is the first clean sheet of his career.
Despite being outshot by the Wolves, 16-14, and conceding five more corners, the Lions recorded a 21 percent shooting percentage en route to the win.
