Herrera’s Big Night Leads Lions to 6-1 Win Over Webber
SAINT LEO, Fla. – Edgar Herrera tallied two goals and a assist as the Saint Leo men's soccer team (2-0) upended the Webber International Warriors (0-2), 6-1, Monday night from University Field.
The non-region contest saw Herrera open the scoring when he turned and blasted a shot from the left edge of the area off a feed from Joel Purkiss in the 17th minute.
Soon after, Herrera took advantage of a Webber foul as the sophomore's set piece found the upper left corner to bring the score to 2-0. After a kickoff miscue cut the Lions' lead in half, Saint Leo settled in over the final 20 minutes as Viktor Wikner put together a brilliant goal in the 37th-minute and Michael Panter put home the Lions' fourth goal after a cross from Konstantin Pyankov in the 43rd.
Out of halftime, Bruno Da Silva rocketed a left foot shot from 15 yards out into the upper left portion of the net.
Purkiss finished-off Webber with terrific right to left shot that crossed the face of goal and found the upper left.
It was all the Lions needed as all six goals tallied during the Labor Day showdown occurred before a 30-minute lightning delay.
In total, the Green and Gold outshot the Warriors, 16-6. The Lions also held an advantage in corners, 7-1, while Webber eclipsed Saint Leo in the foul department, 14-11.
The Lions will return to action on Friday, September 9, when they travel to South Carolina to battle Newberry College. Kickoff is set for 7:00 pm. For the latest news, information, and updates on the men's soccer team, visit SaintLeoLions.com.
