Frank Jewell Presented First Don Landry Service Award

Sunshine State Conference Recognizes Former Soccer Supervisor of Officials

ORLANDO, Fla. - On March 24, former Sunshine State Conference soccer assignor Frank Jewell was presented with the first Don Landry Service Award. Commissioner Jay Jones presented Jewell with the award in a ceremony at Clare Bridge in Ormond Beach, Fla.

For more than 25 years, Jewell served as the conference's supervisor of officials, assigning referees to each SSC soccer game that was played over that quarter of a century.

Jewell was dedicated in his work and demanded that his officials act in that same manner. It would be impossible to find anyone familiar with the inner-workings of SSC soccer who did not know Jewell and did not have a high opinion of his character and service.

Fran Reidy, who is now the Athletic Director at Saint Leo University, once served as the men's soccer coach there. Reidy said of Jewell, "Frank took over for the legend, Ray Bernabei and not only filled his shoes, but raised the bar even higher with all the conferences he worked with. Frank was ahead of his time in terms of evaluations, feedback and assessment of officials. He brought a standard and professionalism to the group which carries on today."

Jewell retired from his long service following the 2009 soccer season. Upon his retirement, the administrators in the SSC knew that he should be recognized for his dedication and commitment to the league. As such, he was presented with the first-ever Don Landry Service Award.

Mr. Landry was the commissioner of the SSC from July 1994 until September 2004. During his tenure, the SSC established its first conference office headquarters and SSC teams won 24 NCAA Division II titles. SSC administrators felt it would be appropriate to name the unique service award in Mr. Landry's honor. They were equally convinced that there would be no one more appropriate to receive the inaugural honor than Jewell.

"It was an honor to be able to present Mr. Jewell with this service award," Jones said. "It would be impossible to adaquately demonstrate the level of gratitude that exists throughout our conference's soccer community for the years of work that Frank contributed. It is our hope that this honor will help his great work to always be remembered."
