SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo men’s soccer team (3-3) were edged-out by the Flagler College Saints (3-3-1) 1-0 in a non-conference slate, Wednesday evening from University Field.

The Lions fell behind early as Flagler struck with the first and only tally of the game in the fifth minute of play. Still, SLU had multiple opportunities through the game to even the score but missed chances and strong Saints’ defense left the Lions with a zero on the scoreboard for all 90 minutes. Jonathan Glenn and Ruud Van Der Sar provided the majority of the opportunities, as they combined for 10 total shots.

Flagler forward Conor Killeen struck for his second goal of the 2009 season as Mack Hough fed him a pass in the front of the box. He did not let the opportunity to score slip him by as slid it past Lions’ goaltender Erik Mozzo for the goal and a 1-0 lead.

SLU did not give in though as they continued to press the Saints’ defense in the first half, delivering eight shots.

In the second half, Saint Leo only increased their offensive productivity, blasting 15 more shots. However, only three of their blasts landed on-target. The Green & Gold generated a pair of scoring chances in the waning minutes but their efforts were to no avail as SLU fell for the second consecutive game.

It was certainly a physical game for both squads, as they combined for 37 total fouls. Flagler also found themselves on the receiving end of four yellow cautions.

Overall, SLU outplayed the Flagler, outshooting the Saints 23-6 while being awarded seven corner kicks. The shutout loss was the first for the SLU offense since an October 10, 2008 defeat to the Rollins College Tars.

Mozzo (3-3) was the tough-luck loser in net for the Green & Gold. He tallied two saves on six shots, three of which were on-goal.

Saint Leo returns to the field on Saturday, September 26 as they open Sunshine State Conference play against the Tars from Rollins College. Kickoff from University Field is set for 7:00 p.m.
