SAINT LEO, Fla. – Two Saint Leo University fall sports have earned repeat weekly honors as Volleyball middle-blocker Kaitlin McKenna and Men’s Soccer player Ruud Van Der Sar were named SLU Athletes of the Week for the period ending September 20th.
McKenna keyed a pair of Sunshine State Conference victories this week as she hit a blistering .469 and posted 4.29 kills per set. In the week’s first contest, a home match against Rollins, the junior middle-blocker posted 14 kills and only made three errors in the Lions’ sweep over the Tars. The Farmington Hills, Mich. native then dropped down 16 kills in 26 tries as SLU traveled across the state to face Florida Tech. Her .462 average in that match accompanied three assisted blocks and one solo stuff as the Lions earned the 3-1 road win.
Van Der Sar was a bright spot in a rough week for the SLU men’s soccer team as he managed to score the only Lions’ goal in the 3-1 loss to Palm Beach Atlantic at home. After going behind 3-0 and needing a spark in their lineup, Head Coach Joel Harrison inserted the defender from the Netherlands into the match in the 75th minute. Just four minutes later the Lions whipped a corner into the mixer where Van Der Saar used his height to redirect it into the net, snapping the shutout.
Saint Leo men’s and women’s soccer, as well as volleyball, has one of the busiest home weeks for the Lions in the Fall semester. Men’s soccer (3-2, 0-0 SSC) will host Flagler College on Wednesday before a Sunshine State Conference match at home against a very tough Rollins team on Saturday evening.
Women’s soccer (2-0-1, 1-0 SSC) will start this week’s slate of events hosting their first SSC tilt of 2009 against Rollins on Wednesday night before a non-conference match with Clearwater Christian on Friday evening.
After having the week off, Saint Leo Volleyball (11-2, 2-0 SSC) will host two big SSC matches in consecutive days against Lynn and Barry. The Lions face the Lynn Fighting Knights on Friday night before turning around in less than 24 hours and hosting Barry on Saturday afternoon.
