WINTER PARK, Fla. – The Saint Leo University men’s soccer team (5-5-1, 2-2 SSC) fell in a hard-fought match to the Rollins College Tars (6-6, 3-2 SSC), 1-0 in Sunshine State Conference action Friday evening at Cahall-Sandspur Field.

The Lions and Tars combined for 32 shots on the evening, unfortunately for Saint Leo’s cause, the only shots on goal were provided by Rollins College. The Tars were able to blast five shots at Lions ‘keeper Griffin Pharr. He made four impressive saves but one quality strike put the Lions at a one goal deficit for the majority of the match. The Lions registered 14 shots by four players, including four apiece by Brandon Whitsett and Eusebio Montoya. Jonathan Glenn and Bruce Cutler contributed three each.

The Lions came out poised and confident maneuvering with the Tars step for step. But a flurry of Rollins College shots led to the Tars lone goal, while staggering the Lions attack. The Lions surrendered the goal in the 18-minute mark of the first half off a free kick from 35-yards out. The header gave the Tars the advantage that stood for the entire match.  Although outshot in the half, SLU drew many chances that went high or just wide of the net.

The Lions came out much more aggressive in the second half, pressuring the Tars on every touch. Saint Leo’s most aggressive pressure of the night nearly lead to the game being equalized in the 87th minute when Jonathan Glenn charged the 18-yard box with the ball and touched a pass back to Bruce Cutler, firing a shot on target. The Rollins goaltender reached out with his fingertips and deflected the ball off the bottom part of the crossbar and covered it, not allowing a rebound chance. During the final fifteen minutes, the Tars did everything they could to keep the ball away from the Lions poised attackers. Saint Leo couldn’t put enough pressure on Rollins though and the Tars dump tactic worked, allowing them to walk away with the win.

The Lions remain winless on the road.

Saint Leo was outshot by the Tars 18-14, while not register a shot on goal the entire night.

The Lions return to SSC action Wednesday, October 15 with a showdown at Florida Southern College. Kickoff is slated for 7:00 p.m. The match will be broadcasted live on the SaintLeoLions AudioCast Network.
