SAINT LEO, Fla. - Saint Leo Lions men’s soccer player Leonardo Nogueira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) was named defensive Sunshine State Conference Player of the Week; it was announced Monday by SSC Commissioner Michael J. Marcil.
The junior defender played 44 minutes of outstanding defense on way to a 3-1 upset of the No. 25 ranked University of Tampa Spartans. He and the rest of the Lions defensive front, held the Spartans to just one shot on goal the entire evening. The Spartans could only manage six total shots after averaging 18 per contest heading into the match.
Nogueira also helped on the offensive side, as he added two of the Lions 20 shots. The three goals the Lions scored marked the first time all season that a Tampa ‘keeper had been scored on.
Nogueira is the third Lions’ student-athlete to receive SSC Player of the Week honors. The Lions travel to St. Augustine, Fla. Tuesday evening to take on the Flagler College Saints. Kickoff for the match is slated for 7:00 p.m.
