Saint Leo, Fla. (August 30, 2008) – The Saint Leo men’s soccer team (2-0) defeated the University of Indianapolis Greyhounds (0-1) in a hard fought match Saturday night on a soggy pitch at University Field.
The Lions and Greyhounds played to an even 0-0 score in the first half. The half was highlighted by 16 combined fouls and only six total shots.
Both teams began to get a feel for the pitch in the second half though, as keeper Griffin Pharr (So., Ft. Myers, Fla.) saw a Greyhound shot hit the top of the crossbar just two minutes into the second half. The Lions also had their chances in the half, as well. Jonathan Glenn (So., Maloney Gardens, Trinidad and Tabago) had two shots on goal in a seven minute span and Brandon Whitsett (Sr., Palm Harbor, Fla.) shot the ball just wide of a sprawling Indianapolis keeper.
Tempers also began to rise between the two teams in the half resulting in two Greyhound yellow cards, a Lions yellow card and one Greyhound red card. The over aggressive play allowed Saint Leo to play with a man advantage the rest of the way. Still, the two teams closed regulation in a 0-0 tie.
After a quiet first extra session, the Lions and Greyhounds took to the wet pitch for the final ten minutes. Each team pressured when they had the ball in their own end but could not manage a shot. In one final push the Lions crowded the Greyhounds’ box. A cross over the middle saw a charging Eusebio Montoya (Sr., Smithfield, N.C.) and Glenn heading to the ball. But before contact could be made from a Lion, an Indianapolis player, in an attempt to clear, tipped the ball past their own keeper and into their net giving the Lions their second win of the season.
The Lions travel to Pensacola, Fla. on Friday, September 5 to take on the University of West Florida in non-conference action. Kickoff is set to begin at 6:00 p.m. The game can be heard live on the SaintLeoLions Audiocast Network.
