Saint Leo, Fla. (August 28, 2008) – The Saint Leo men’s soccer team (1-0) defeated the Montreat College Cavaliers (0-1), 3-2 in a ninety-minute thriller Thursday night at University Field.
The Lions were lead by Forward Eusebio Montoya (Sr., Smithfield, N.C.), as he recorded his first two goals of the season, including the eventual game-winner. Montoya finished off his night with a beautiful pass inside the 18-yard box to Brandon Whitsett (Sr., Palm Harbor, Fla.) who found the back of the net for his first goal of the season.
Montreat started out of the gate quickly trying to force the pace of the game but the Lions’ defenders held strong and turned tenacious defense into offense when Montoya blasted his first goal of the season in the 15th minute.
With a 1-0 halftime lead, Saint Leo came out of the locker room energized and struck early when Whitsett slid the ball past a diving keeper in the 49th minute to give the Lions a 2-0 advantage.
During the second half, the Cavaliers gave the Lions’ set piece defense fits all night as Montreat snuck two corner kicks across the mouth of the goal.
Inbetween Cavalier goals, Montoya struck again. Art Gendreau (Sr., Orlando, Fla.) fed the ball to streaking Montoya where he found the back of the net for the second time and lead they would not relinquish.
The Lions outshot the Cavaliers 17-7. The game also featured four yellow cards, including three for Montreat College.
Saint Leo continues non-conference action Saturday, August 30 against the University of Indianapolis. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. at University Field.
