Miami Shores, Fla. (October 26, 2007) – The Saint Leo University men’s soccer team (9-4-3, 4-3-1 SSC) drew 0-0 at Barry University (5-9-2, 0-6-2 SSC) in the final regular season match of 2007 on Friday night in Miami Shores, Fla.
With the tie, the Lions will be the No. 5 seed in next week’s Sunshine State Conference Tournament. Saint Leo will travel to Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. to face No. 4 seed Nova Southeastern University on Tuesday. The time of the game will be determined when official tournament announcements are made on Sunday.
Each team had several golden scoring opportunities throughout the match, but neither could beat the opposing goalkeeper or the woodwork. Saint Leo goalkeeper Griffin Pharr (Fr., Ft. Myers, Fla.) made a career-high 12 saves to earn his first career clean sheet, while Barry starter Devala Gorrick made four saves for the hosts.
Saint Leo hit the crossbar twice in the first half. The first effort off the bar came from a corner kick when Leonardo Nogueira had his glancing header ricochet back off the woodwork. The second effort was from Kyle Kuhlman who almost converted a mistake by Barry ‘keeper Devala Gorrick, but his shot again went off the crossbar.
In the second half, the best opportunity fell to Barry central defender Nenad Savic, but his header went into the ground and then bounced narrowly over the crossbar to keep the sides level.
In extra-time, Barry’s Pedro Petris had a long range effort saved by Pharr and the Lions were unable to threaten the Buc goal.
In total, Barry outshot Saint Leo 19-13, including the 12-4 advantage in shots on target. The two teams combined for 49 fouls in the game.
